Monday is the national closing day, and the week after New Year is worse — a great many of these shut for a fortnight while the collections are changed over. Check the calendar before the flight, not after.
Collections rotate by season here as a matter of principle. Nomura opens for a few weeks in spring and autumn and is otherwise firmly shut; Seikadō shows the Yohen Tenmoku rarely and says so plainly. Go for the house and treat the objects as weather.
The rail pass makes Kanazawa, Kurashiki and Matsumoto all possible from Kyoto in a day, which is a trap. Two of the three deserve the night, and Kurashiki is the one to sleep in.
